Vans was foundend in 1966 in California by Paul Van Doren and three other members who opened the first Vans store under the name The Van Doren Rubber Company. The company continued to grow and the style was especially designed for skaters. With a padded collar and different color combinations, Vans became the shoe of choice for a generation of skateboarders due to the non-slip bottom being more conducive for a better grip. During the 1980s, Vans started to create shoes for a number of sports, including skateboarding, wakeboarding, motocross and surfing in an effort to compete with the large athletic shoe companies. The brand was also famous and worn in high schools. The Vans Slip-ons, for example, gained international attention.
