Sebago is a Michigan-based company specialised in upscale boating and deck shoes, outdoor shoes and dress shoes. As the result of a high consumer demand for quality, casual footwear, a handsewn footwear factory was established in New England in 1946. The company is named after Sebago lake, a large body of water in Maine. In the language of the local tribe of Abenaki Indians, Sebago means « big stretch of water ». This is meant to refer to the company’s affiliation to nautical sports. Sailing is indeed part of Sebago’s heritage : the company is not only an important sponsor of international sailing competitions but also the official supplier of yachting footwear for the U.S. sailing team. Sebago’s philosophy is based on finest craftmanship. This passion has allowed the creation of some of the world’s most iconic, handsewn footwear styles. Based in the USA, the company quickly expanded to Europe and is currently present in 120 countries. The brand is known for its level of craftmanship and the high-quality materials. In the 1980 the « Docksides » collection became a fashion trend in American universities and high schools. They were also the must have casual shoe for sailors and for tourists in the South of France. The collection’s slogan represents this broad popularity : « Made for sailors – loved by everyone ». Today, the Docksides are still handsewn with the finest craftmanship. However, through the use of new materials and colours, they have become a popular casual shoe.
